Biography

Dr. Degutis serves as the Director and Co-PI of the Yale Center for Public Health Preparedness, which designs and implements education in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.  She served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship in the Office of Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN). She is a Past President of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the oldest and largest public health association in the world. Dr. Degutis has received the Distinguished Career Award from the Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Section of APHA, and was recently named an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health.

Dr. Degutis is a co-investigator on Project ED Health, which is studying the impact of brief interventions for high-risk alcohol consumption in ED patients, and co-director of Project ASSERT, a substance abuse screening and intervention program based in the ED at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is working with Dean Paul Cleary at the Yale School of Public Health on the definition of an agenda for public health systems and services research with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Additionally, her work includes research on alcohol impaired driving policy and underage drinking policy and interventions.

Dr. Degutis is a member of the editorial board of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, and is an active peer reviewer for professional journals and grant programs. In addition, she serves on the IOM’s Advisory Board for the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship Program and the Executive Board of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. She is known internationally for her work in public health, injury, substance abuse and policy, and she has received research funding from federal agencies (CDC, NHTSA, SAMHSA, HRSA) and foundations (Robert Wood Johnson). She serves as a research mentor to ED residents, clinical scholars, and both medical and public health students, with expertise in the areas of policy, injury, substance abuse and disaster preparedness.
